Hi.

Welcome to my blog where I document my adventures in Kansas City!

2.5 Ways to Cook Morel Mushrooms

2.5 Ways to Cook Morel Mushrooms

Howdy, y’all! Welcome to the 5 minutes of Missouri/Kansas’ annual morel season! I am going to make this short and sweet - with a season this short, you don’t have time to do anything except hunt for those magic mushrooms (lol, not that type but you do you #TeamNoJudgement). I was lucky enough to find about 50 morels over the last weekend, and wanted to give you all a few ideas to cook them! As you all should know by now, I am a very sub-par chef (although quarantine has forced my hand a bit there and I am very slowly improving). These are fail-proof ways to make the most of your morels! So easy, an idiot (me) could do it.

  1. My personal favorite - and probably the easiest! Simply saute the ‘shrooms to get the most out of their flavor.

    • Heat 2 T oil in a pan over medium heat

    • Slice your morels length wise in halves or quarters depending on size. Set aside.

    • Toss in minced garlic and/or onions - whatever you have at home is great!

    • When the garlic and onions begin to get fragrant, throw in your morels. Cook for 2 minutes until soft and then add 1-2 T butter for flavor

    • All mushrooms to cook for about 5 minutes. For next level flavor, add a splash of soy sauce to bring out the umami.

    • Serve and try to share! Sharing definitely not required.

  2. Pan Fried (my entire family’s fave)

  • Prepare your morels the same way (trim bottom stem, cut lengthwise in halves or quarters).

  • Whip two eggs in small dish and pour about a cup of flour in separate dish.

  • Dredge mushrooms in egg, then flour and set on a plate for frying. Funny story about this - my dad tried to recreate this recipe and combined the flour and eggs and tried to batter his mushrooms that way. Needless to say, he ended up sauteing his.

  • Heat 3-4 T oil in a pan on medium heat. When the oil is sizzling, add your mushrooms.

  • Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Only flip once! This helps keep the crispiness.

  • Set aside on a plate covered with a paper towel to soak up excess oil. Season with salt and pepper

  • Serve!

2.5. Coconut Battered ‘Shrooms

  • Same exact recipe as above, but use coconut flour instead of regular!

Let me know if you have any other recipes for these babies! And tag me in your morel hunting pics - can’t wait to see your haul!
